While interning at the American Library in Paris a few summers ago, I came across this issue of Library Journal from 1950. This is sweet, beautiful proof that we’ve been worried about new media making reading obsolete for oh…ever.
I’ve been wanting to start a pen-pal art project with someone I met on Tumblr for some time now but coming up with something that wasn’t too personal or awkward has been hard.
It finally came to me. Learn to communicate from scratch! Not totally from scratch mind you but a new language that isn’t a simple cryptographic shift from an existing language. I won’t be dictating the development of the linguistic conventions either. The idea is to convey concepts gradually and let the other person try to formulate things as well.
I think this’ll be great, and an awesome way to use all the blanks I’ve been collecting over the past few years. For starters I need to drag out my old Highschool notebooks and find some of the old glyphs I used to doodle so I don’t have to start totally from scratch.
